Apple reported quarterly net profits of $5.99 billion, nearly double what it made a year ago.  Revenue was $24.67 billion, a rise of 83 percent.  Apple sold 18.65 million iPhones, a rise of 113 percent.  However, iPad sales were 4.69 million, below analysts' expectations.

Global tablet revenues will exceed $49 billion worldwide by 2015, with North America, Asia-Pacific and Western Europe leading the way as the most valuable regions for tablet vendors, according to Strategy Analytics.

Apple has denied that iPhones store a record of their users' movements for up to a year and blamed privacy concerns partly on a misunderstanding.

According to a recent survey of U.S. physicians, 61 percent intend to own an iPhone by the end of 2011.  This is up from 39 percent at the beginning of the year and compares with the iPhone's 24.7 percent adoption among general smartphone users in the U.S.

Samsung at present has 15 percent market share in the smartphone segment.  During the launch event of the handsets, Yadav stated that they are expecting to reach 40 percent market share in the smartphone segment by sometime this year.

Among adult smartphone users in the U.S., 1 percent browse the Internet, 77 percent search, 68 percent use an app, and 48 percent watch videos on their smartphone.  72 percent use their smartphones while consuming other media, with a third while watching TV.

In the first quarter 2010, some 31 percent of consumers indicated they wanted an Android smartphone as their next device, up from 26 percent from Nielsen’s third quarter 2010 survey.  Meanwhile, Apple’s iOS scored 30 percent, down from 33 percent, and RIM’s BlackBerry came in third at 11 percent (a dip from 13 percent).

Apple ended its most recent quarter with nearly $66 billion in cash, increasing its war chest by an astounding $6.1 billion in just three months.  The company’s cash pile is worth more than the combined market capitalization of Nokia, Research In Motion and Motorola Mobility – or half of Google’s enterprise value.

Nokia’s chief executive has declared Android smartphones to be his main competitive target, in spite of data showing that Apple has overtaken the Finnish company to become the world’s biggest mobile phone maker by sales for the first time.

The Chinese market, the biggest in the world in terms of consumer base, has emerged as the fastest growing market for its flagship smartphone, the iPhone.  The revelation came when Tim Cook, COO of Apple, in an interview with a news agency, said the company managed to generate $5 billion in revenue from the Chinese market.
